Work Experience and Dream Placement

Information about work experience and Dream Placement.

Opportunities for School, College and University students to gain practical work experience in Cumberland Council.

Cumberland Council is all about compassion and empowerment and we want to see as many work experience opportunities being made available. This means being proactive and promoting our opportunities to a wider group of people, we want to increase the diversity of those joining us to experience the workplace and we intend to work closely with our partners to reach those who may be at a disadvantage and ensure that they are aware and encouraged to take part.

Work Experience requests are usually over the summer period; June through to August. Requests may come in outside this period which some services / teams maybe able to accommodate. We understand that it may be sometimes difficult to accommodate a work experience placement for a full week (5 days) due to service delivery and resources available to support a student.

This can be worked around, by just offering a 3 day placement or even 2 days as potentially in some cases the student could work in another team/service area to make up a weeks work experience.

Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is a common term but what exactly does it mean? The term is sometimes used in different ways by different people. It is often used in the context of autism and ADHD.

Neurodiversity refers to the natural differences in the way our brains work. Some people refer to themselves as neurodiverse.

The aim of the Neurodiversity guidance, is to help support managers and employees with any queries regarding neurodiversity in the workplace. We aim to promote a greater understanding of neurodiversity, and seek to eradicate any discriminatory practices.

Neurodiversity, is a relatively new term that many people may not yet know much about. Learning more about neurodiversity, and taking steps to understand how to best support everyone in workplaces, can be hugely beneficial for employers and employees.

Dream Placement

Cumberland Council supported Dream Placement in 2024 and will continue support into future years.

Dream Placement is a unique Cumbrian initiative, project managed by the Centre for Leadership Performance (CforLP), that brings together motivated young students aged 16-18 with some of the most forward-looking and successful businesses in the county. It is a leadership development programme that for some young people will result in a week’s Dream Placement in industry.

The Dream Placement scheme has been co-created by CforLP with businesses across Cumbria who want to connect with their future workforce and showcase the breadth of opportunities within their organisations. The scheme gives all young people who apply development opportunities and a chance to come together with employers for safe meaningful dialogue and engagement at each stage of this 6 month programme.

More information can be found on the Centre for Leadership Performance website.
