Apprenticeships

Information about apprenticeships at Cumberland Council

Cumberland Council encourages the recruitment of apprentices and considers this to be a major contribution to succession planning and talent management.

When considering taking on an apprentice it is important that you consider the following:

  • Budget for the initial costs and future cost for the post
  • Work commitment and job description
  • On the job mentor
  • Qualification and availability of training
  • Availability of levy funds to pay for learning

For more information about apprenticeship opportunities, please check out the Cumberland Apprenticeships website.

The Apprenticeship Team is a hosted service for Cumberland Council, Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

Traineeships

A skills development programme for 16 to 24-year olds. It includes an unpaid work placement and is designed to help you get ready for an apprenticeship.

From 1 August 2023, the government will no longer fund a standalone national traineeships programme. Traineeships can continue to be offered by providers locally.

Read the written ministerial statement on the skills update from Robert Halfon, Minister for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education.

Supported Internships

Supported Internships are a structured study programme specifically aimed at 16–24-year-olds who have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and who want to move into employment but will need support to do so.

A supported internship will be based primarily at an employer and will normally last a year. This includes unpaid work placements of at least six months.

The young people are enrolled with a training provider (college) but spend most of their time within a workplace.

The aim is to support young people with special education needs and disabilities to develop their work skills in order to gain paid employment.

Young people on supported internships are expected to require a higher level of support than a trainee or apprentice.
