About British Sign Language (BSL)

BSL is often the first or preferred language used by people who are Deaf in the UK. It is recognised in law as a language in its own right and has its own grammar and vocabulary, which is structured differently to English.

Providing access to BSL interpretation ensure deaf people have equitable access to council services, in line with our duties under the Equality Act 2010.
