Support in the event of a death in service

What happens and what support is available when a colleague dies while employed by the council.

Supporting colleagues affected by a death

When colleagues are informed of the death of an employee, it may be appropriate to direct them to advice and support.

Getting advice and support

If you are affected by the death of a colleague, you can contact:

  • your line manager
  • occupational health
  • HR

Find further bereavement support.

Supporting close colleagues

Close colleagues may be grieving and wish to express their sympathy for the deceased.

Where appropriate, a line manager may:

  • organise a collection for a wreath or circulate a condolence card
  • allow colleagues time off to attend the funeral
  • suggest organising a colleague support group to help staff manage the change

Support should be offered sensitively, taking account of individual needs and circumstances.
