Discretionary Voluntary Redundancy

The Voluntary Redundancy (VR) scheme offers colleagues a supported way to consider future plans, while helping protect essential community services.

Who is the Discretionary Voluntary Redundancy is for

The Scheme applies to employees who at the date of termination of employment:

  • have continuous local government service of 2 years or more at your proposed end date
  • are not already on notice of termination of their employment
  • are not subject to a live disciplinary process relating to safeguarding, health and safety or fraud

Employees are eligible to apply for VR if, at the date their employment would end under the scheme, they:

  • have been employed by the Council for more than 2 years, or hold a contract that allows an application to be made under this Scheme
  • are not already on notice of termination, for example due to resignation
  • have successfully passed probation

These criteria are in place to ensure fairness and consistency, and to help colleagues understand from the outset whether the scheme applies to them.
