HR modules: advice and support through employment

The teams within HR and advice on certain aspects of the HR role that can help provide support for all employees.

Absence management

To help managers effectively manage sickness absence within their teams, there is a helpful e-learning module within “iLearn” site.

iLearn - Absence and wellbeing (sharepoint.com)

This will provide an overview on Cumberland’s absence procedure and will provide links to documentation and step by step instructions on how to manage sickness absence. All managers  are encouraged to set some time aside to go through this useful learning tool.

This module is currently for Cumberland and ex-county council staff only. Copeland, Allerdale and Carlisle staff operate under a separate policy. We appreciate this isn’t ideal, however due to the merging of the four councils this is the current landscape we operate within at present. Our longer-term aim is to have a single policy for all of Cumberland.

If you need any further help and support with absence management you can a ticket through the People Management Portal and then select HR Advisory.

If you have any suggestions as to how absence management could be made easier for managers or feedback on improvements we could make to the policy, we’d really like to hear from you.

Disciplinary procedure

The disciplinary procedure is intended to support managers and employees where misconduct issues arise.

Read more about the disciplinary procedure.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion

As part of an employee’s induction with the authority, there is a mandatory e-Learning module on the “iLearn” site on Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging.

Grievance procedure

You can raise a grievance if you have concerns about your work, conditions, or relationships with colleagues. The council or school will aim to resolve grievances quickly and fairly.

If you’re not satisfied with the outcome, you can take your grievance to the next stage of the procedure.

Further advice is available for:

  • council employees - contact your Directorate HR team or use the People Management Portal
  • school staff - contact your HR provider or, for faith schools, the relevant diocesan authority

When thinking about what action to take, managers should consider if they need any further advice from their senior manager.
