Grading
Once jobs are evaluated, roles are grouped into grades or bands.
Jobs of a similar size and responsibility sit in the same grade, even if they are all in different services.
Grading helps create clear and consistent career pathways across the council.
Pay
Pay is linked to grades, but it is decided separately from job evaluation.
Pay decisions take account of:
- affordability
- benchmarking
- council policy
Job evaluation helps compare roles. It does not set pay on its own.
Terms and conditions
Terms and conditions are specified in employment contracts and includes:
- working hours
- leave
- pay dates
- allowances
- some types of benefits, for example learning and development support
Career pathways
The programme aims to support clear career pathways and can help to recognise different ways to develop and progress, including:
- leadership and management routes
- technical or specialist routes
What this means now
At this stage no decisions have been made about pay, grading or terms and conditions.
Where appropriate, future changes would involve trade union consultation and negotiation before formal decision-making.
