Volunteering process for line managers

How to support team member to take volunteering opportunities, completing a risk assessment, ensuring the organisation has insurance and approving time off.

You should firstly discuss the aspiration to undertake volunteering with your team member. 

You are expected to flexible with volunteering requests but where, on occasions, this is not possible, you should make sure your team member fully understands why and are supported to identity an alternative time or opportunity.

Completing a risk assessment

You should support your team member to fill in a risk assessment.

A risk assessment should be completed before any volunteering activity. This makes sure that any potential risks such as lone working and personal safety have been identified and discussed.

Check the volunteering organisation has insurance

Make sure your team member has checked that the volunteering organisation has insurance cover for 'volunteers' under both the Employers Liability and Public Liability insurance policies.

Approving time off

You can approve time off for volunteering activities on iTrent as Voluntary Paid Time Off.
