Volunteering stories

I recently used one of my volunteering days to undertake my role as Deputy Lead for the Association for Project Management (APM) North West Network.

I first volunteered with Lakesman Triathlons while working for Allerdale Borough Council back in 2015 and have volunteered every year since.

I volunteer at Cummersdale School, listening to Year 3 and 4 children reading on a 1-to-1 basis.

I volunteered with Raise: Cumbria Community Forest and took part in a conservation day at Hammonds Pond, Carlisle.

In 2026, two members of the Cumberland hosted waste team joined colleagues from Westmorland and Furness Council, Better-Not-Stop, Restore, The Well Communities and Manna House Cumbria for a post-festival salvage day.

I volunteered at Rebuild Carlisle in 2025 and at Eskdale Mill in summer 2026.

I used one of my volunteering leave days to support our local food bank, which was a truly meaningful experience. It gave me a greater understanding of the challenges many people in our community face.

I am a keen amateur botanist and have volunteered with Cumbria Wildlife Trust for several years, primarily carrying out hay meadow surveys.

I volunteered at a National Sheep Association event and the Westmorland County Show.

I have been volunteering at my children’s primary school for the last few years, my old primary school and my mams too! I am part of a small group a parents that help with fundraising known as the “Friends of Bookwell".
