Understanding yourself and your approach to change

More than ever before, careers are full of possibilities, uncertainty and change, this can be interesting and exciting but, for some, it can also be an anxious time and bring feelings of uncertainty.

Taking time to understand yourself and your approach to change can help you to respond differently. Equally, if you are a line manager/supervisor, how you respond to change can have a fundamental impact on your team.

Periods of change provide opportunities to reflect on who you are, where you are, why you are there and how you got there.

Take time to reflect on your strengths, motivations, interests and skills:

  • what helps you to thrive at work?
  • are you effectively using what you are good at/what interests you?
  • what areas of your work do you find difficult and why?
  • what is the art of the possible?
  • how can you ensure that, as far as possible, you are in the driving seat?

Understanding yourself better is a key starting point on any change journey.

This can include exploring if you want to/are able to do something different to what you are doing now.

How you can help yourself (and your team) make sense of the change

Focusing on what is within your power, is really powerful during times of change. As humans we are predisposed to focus on the negative, worst-case scenario; the “fight or flight” response. In reality, most things we worry about never actually happen. So, what we can do, is look at ways in which we can focus on what is in our control. Where we can influence and contribute, is a much more healthy and productive approach.

Take some time to consider the following points – what is in your control? What can influence you? How can you accept what you cannot control and what are the benefits of this?:

  • If I can't control or influence it, can I learn to accept it? For example, actions of others and impact on the economy
  • If it's not in my control, can I exert influence? For example, my home environment, my finances, my family and friends/colleagues
  • Is it in my control? For example, my behaviours, actions, attitudes, outlook and decision
