Communication

Everybody sees the world in different ways. In times of change, skills such as effective communication and enabling employees to challenge and critique proposals to understand them better and/or to help shape organisational thinking, are essential.

One of the best ways is to help maintain wellbeing is through regular, timely communication.

If you are a line manager, it is better to communicate too often rather than not enough, as this ensures all employees are engaged in the process.

When respect is mutual and part of the company culture, it can encourage transparency, responsibility, motivation and staff happiness.

Active listening:

  • allowing questions to be aired, gives employees the opportunity to see where they may fit into any proposed change, and shape what is about to happen
  • refrain from making judgements and remember that your goal is to understand. Allow the employee to finish speaking and avoid interrupting
  • consider why your employees feel this way by putting yourself in their shoes. This will help to validate their thoughts and feelings
